Former president Barack Obama and ex-House speaker Nancy Pelosi have reportedly privately expressed their concerns about President Joe Biden’s future as he continues to struggle to convince the American electorate and his fellow Democrats that he remains the right person to top the ticket and take on Donald Trump in November.
Since his disastrous presidential debate performance against Trump last month, Biden has faced panicked calls to quit the race for the White House to make way for a younger successor.
Speaking at an hour-long press conference in Washington DC on Thursday, the president again vowed to “finish this job” and defeat Trump for a second time.
“We have never been here before,” he said, when pressed on the threat the Republican poses.
“That is why I didn’t hand off to another generation – I have to finish this job because there’s so much at stake.”
However, Biden badly undermined his case with a fresh gaffe in which he referred to his own deputy Kamala Harris as “vice president Trump”.
That was his second unforced error of the day after he earlier introduced Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky as “President Putin” at a Nato event.
Biden needed to reassure America after disastrous debate. But a string of gaffes have marred his fightback
Here’s an overview of the president’s most recent post-debate blunders and mix-ups, which, understandable though they may be, keep on undermining his case for staying on.

Moment Biden’s team reacts to president calling Kamala Harris ‘vice president Trump’
Revealing footage has captured the moment members of Joe Biden’s cabinet reacted to his latest gaffe during his high-stakes press conference on Thursday night.
During what was tipped to be a critical briefing – as he seeks to win over growing skepticism about his competence to serve – the 81-year-old president mistakenly referred to his deputy Kamala Harris as “Vice President Trump”.
“I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president, though I think she was not qualified to be president,” Biden said, without correcting himself.
Biden’s Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan were sat in the audience during the stunning moment and their expressions were picked up on the C-SPAN cameras.
The top officials appeared crestfallen and dismayed by the gaffe, seemingly trying not to react too significantly – closing their eyes and looking at the floor in silent dejection.

Obama and Pelosi ‘hold talks on Biden’s future’
Former president Barack Obama and ex-House speaker Nancy Pelosi have reportedly privately expressed their concerns about President Joe Biden’s future as he continues to struggle to convince the American electorate and his fellow Democrats that he remains the right person to top the ticket and take on Trump in November.
“Neither is quite sure what to do,” reports CNN, rather ominiously, with both keenly aware that neither Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer or House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has the personal clout with Biden to sway him.
Pelosi has been non-commital on Biden in recent days while saying that questions about his wellbeing are “legitimate” while Obama is understood to have known about his friend George Clooney’s New York Times op-ed calling for Biden to step aside in advance and raised no objections.

Trump demands judge toss out hush money verdict after immunity ruling
The Republican presidential candidate’s attorneys have formally asked the judge overseeing his hush money trial to throw out the 34-count verdict against him and dismiss the case based on the Supreme Court’s landmark decision on presidential “immunity.”
A 50-page filing in Manhattan criminal court that was made public on Thursday — the day Trump was initially scheduled to be sentenced — argues that several pieces of evidence used against the former president fall under the scope of the Supreme Court’s decision, which shields presidents from criminal prosecution for “official” acts in office.
Those “impermissible official-acts evidence” include Trump’s conversations with a White House aide who testified at the trial, phone records from his time in office, and posts on Twitter, which was “recognized as a formal channel of White House communication in the Trump Administration,” according to Trump’s attorney Todd Blanche.
Here’s the latest from Alex Woodward.

‘Great job, Joe!’ Trump roasts Biden for mixing him up with Kamala Harris in ‘big boy press conference’
Donald Trump and his cronies have, inevitably, been mocking poor old Joe Biden following his press conference gaffe confusing Vice President Kamala Harris with his Republican rival.
“Crooked Joe begins his ‘Big Boy’ Press Conference with, ‘I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president, though I think she was not qualified to be president.’ Great job, Joe!” Trump sneared on Truth Social.
