NEXUS Triggers $120 Credit on Amex and Capital One Cards
NEXUS is a Trusted Traveler Program designed to expedite the border crossing process for low-risk, pre-screened travelers between the United States and Canada. It is jointly managed by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), offering travelers a faster, more convenient way to move through customs and immigration.
NEXUS is available to U.S. and Canadian citizens and lawful permanent residents who meet specific security and background check requirements. Applicants must pass a thorough background check and in-person interview conducted by both U.S. and Canadian border officials.
It’s important to note that NEXUS also offers travelers access to TSA PreCheck lines, Global Entry kiosks. Those two programs are valuable for Americans.
NEXUS had always been the cheapest trusted traveler program at $50, but it wasn’t covered by many credit cards. Global Entry and TSA PreCheck on the other hand are free through many cards.
But as of October 2024, NEXUS costs $120, which is the same price as Global Entry. And with that change it seems that NEXUS now triggers the $120 Global Entry credit on American Express and Capital One credit cards.
There are a couple of datapoints on reddit for American Express (1, 2) and the Capital One Venture X credit card (1).
My guess is that it works because both programs now cost $120 and both transactions are through U.S. Customs and Border Protection. SENTRI also costs $120 now so it’s possible that will trigger the Global Entry credit as well.
The trusted traveler program benefit on Chase credit cards already includes NEXUS, but other issuers don’t.
