Republican presidential candidate Tim Scott is hitting President Biden over his relationship with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and vowing to stop borrowing from Beijing in a new ad being released in Iowa.
“For too long, politicians like Joe Biden have caved to China and sold out American workers,” the South Carolina senator begins in the 30-second TV spot set to begin airing in the early voting state Friday.
“As president, I won’t bow, and I won’t blink. I’ll go toe to toe with President Xi and fight for our jobs,” Scott adds, before vowing to “stop borrowing money from Communist China, expand energy production, strengthen American manufacturing, and bring our supply chains home.”
Biden has claimed to have a close relationship with Xi, repeating versions of a story that he traveled more than 17,000 miles with the Chinese leader while vice president more than 20 times. The claim is so improbable, a Washington Post fact-checker labeled it a “bottomless Pinocchio” lie.
The president has maintained that his policy with China is “competition, not conflict,” while Republicans accuse him of being soft on Beijing at a time when Xi has vowed to overtake the US as the world superpower.
First son Hunter Biden’s business interests in China have also formed part of the basis for an ongoing impeachment inquiry by House Republicans.
The “Caved” ad comes two days after Scott called out rival Vivek Ramaswamy on the GOP debate stage for doing business with the CCP. Ramaswamy responded that the Chinese are “good people who are tainted by a broken system.”
The senator is polling fifth in Iowa at 6.8%, according to Real Clear Politics’ average, behind former President Donald Trump at 49.2%, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at 16%, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley at 8.8% and Ramaswamy at 7%.
The ad is also part of a larger strategy highlighting Scott’s policies meant to strengthen American manufacturing.
“On Joe Biden’s watch, China builds while America borrows. I have a plan to stop borrowing and start building, and create a future Made in America,” Scott said in a statement touting his “Made in America” strategy. “As president, I will cut socialist government spending, reclaim our supply chains, cut taxes, and unleash American energy. We will lead the world in building, growing, and inventing the future.”
Scott’s previous advertisements have promised Iowans he would stop China from buying farmland in the agricultural state.
“I will stop China from buying our farmland, and I will fight for fair trade to ensure our farmers have access to foreign markets,” he said in an ad released in August. “God bless Iowa and the bountiful harvest you provide to our nation each and every year.”
