Couple charged $5,200 for lie-flat seats that wouldn’t recline
The ‘Mint’ experience cost a whopping $5,200 in total – but included seats that reclined fully to offer a flat, nearly seven-foot surface that makes a comfortable bed for passengers. However when the couple boarded the plane on November 3, they realized that Wally’s seat was stuck halfway between upright and flat and Meredith’s was stuck completely upright. Read more

United Airlines addresses air travel safety fears
“I want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus,” wrote Mr Kirby, adding that safety is at the centre of “everything we do”. He said the company was already planning to expand training for pilots and new maintenance technicians and would increase resources to manage its network of suppliers. United carried a record 165 million passengers on its planes last year and brought in $2.6 bn (£2 bn). The company is counting on strong demand for travel to continue. Read more

FINRA Fines M1 Finance $850,000 for Violations Regarding Use of Social Media Influencer Program
FINRA announced today that it has fined M1 Finance LLC $850,000 for social media posts made by influencers on the firm’s behalf that were not fair or balanced, or contained exaggerated, unwarranted, promissory or misleading claims. This case arises from FINRA’s targeted exam of firm practices related to the acquisition of customers through social media channels and represents the first formal FINRA Enforcement disciplinary action involving a firm’s supervision of social media influencers. What the Fight Over the Capital One-Discover Merger Misses About Our Terrible Credit Card System
A fight has commenced over Capital One’s effort to acquire Discover, a deal that would birth an enormous credit card company rivaling Visa, Mastercard and American Express. The resulting competition could, in the short run, lower some costs to businesses and consumers. However, over the longer term, the merger would keep intact the broken and predatory system in which credit card companies profit handsomely by rewarding our richest Americans and advantaging the biggest corporations.
