Unstoppable Domains, a company allowing users to create NFT-based domain names, has launched a new feature allowing users to send and receive messages between domain holders.
Shared exclusively with The Defiant, Unstoppable Messaging allows users to broadcast messages between one another via their NFT domains, which include the popular “.eth,” “.NFT,” and “.crypto” suffixes.
Unstoppable’s .eth messaging is interoperable with other services using the Extensible Message Transport Protocol (XMTP), including Coinbase Wallet, Lens, Aave’s social media graph, and Alchemy, a popular web3 infrastructure provider.
“Anyone using an XMTP-enabled messaging app can message your .eth domain or wallet address,” Unstoppable Domains said. “Messages are end-to-end encrypted and stored on XMTP’s decentralized network, so only you can access and decrypt them.”
Matthew Gould, the founder and CEO of Unstoppable Domains, emphasized that XMTP-based messaging offers benefits over web2 messaging platforms, such as ensuring users exercise control over their data and allowing messages to be accessed from multiple applications.
“It’s portable so you can access your messages across apps,” Gould told The Defiant. “This prevents lock-in to any particular platform and enables users to have ownership and control over their data.”
Web3-native businesses can also leverage the service to provide on-chain support services. Users can contract Unstoppable Domains’ support staff via the support.unstoppable.x domain.
On-China Reputation
Unstoppable Domains provides web3-native domains in the form of NFTs and boasts a userbase of more than 3M.
In a recent appearance on The Defiant Podcast, Gould said Unstoppable initially sought to simplify crypto payments by associating complex alphanumeric wallet addresses with an easily read domain address.
However, Gould noted that many users converged on Unstoppable as a means to build an on-chain identity and reputation, prompting the company to expand beyond payments and seek integrations across the broader web3 ecosystem.
“The way that we’re going to reach the most consumers is by being where they are — that means every app that you’re connecting to [and] every wallet that you’re connecting to,” Gould said.
In June, PancakeSwap, a leading decentralized exchange, integrated support for Unstoppable Domains, allowing users to associate their trading history with an on-chain identity.
Unstoppable deters users from trading on-chain reputation by deleting all associated records when a domain NFT is transferred between wallets. Users can only transfer domains via OpenSea.
