Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has given an update to the rumour that Aston Villa are targeting a loan move for Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet posted a tick on X, formerly Twitter, with the hashtag AVFC.

This move could well speed up as Friday’s deadline gets closer.

Manchester United are expected to re-sign Jonny Evans on a one-year deal after Raphael Varane suffered a fresh injury blow.

Varane, has suffered several setbacks since joining United two years ago, will miss Sunday’s game against Arsenal after picking up a knock against Nottingham Forest last Saturday.

He is expected to be out for a few weeks with the bosses at Old Trafford hopeful he will return before November.

Evans, meanwhile, is a free agent after leaving Leicester in June. He re-joined United on a short-term deal earlier this summer to play on United’s pre-season tour, with a full one-year contract close to being signed.

The 35-year-old started his career at Old Trafford and has made nearly 600 first-team appearances for club and country during his career.

He’s won 11 trophies including three Premier League titles with United and the 2021 FA Cup with Leicester.

Leicester manager Enzo Maresca hailed the contribution of veteran striker Jamie Vardy as the Foxes continued their flying start to the season with a 2-0 Carabao Cup victory at Tranmere.

Second-half strikes from Wilfred Ndidi and former England international Vardy proved the difference as the Championship side ran out 2-0 victors against their League Two opponents.

It was a sixth win out of six for Leicester in all competitions this season and saw 36-year-old Vardy open his account for the campaign after returning to the starting line-up.

The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg reports that Manchester City have rejected a £35m offer from Chelsea to sign forward Cole Palmer.

Palmer has impressed under Pep Guardiola though he is not a regular in City’s side and the Blues believed they may have been able to tempt him down to London.

Manchester United are working on a deal to sign Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat before the transfer window closes later this week.

United have been linked with the 27-year-old Moroccan midfielder for most of the summer and are now pushing to agree a loan deal before the deadline.

Amrabat is said to be keen on a move to Old Trafford though a permanent deal remains unlikely due to United’s financial fair play situation.

The midifelder is under contract until 2024 with the Serie A club with the option to extend by a further 12 months.

Manchester United have sent a proposal to Chelsea in the hopes of signing Marc Cucurella on loan. The Blues are said to have responded to United and talks are ongoing for the left-back.

United’s offer is an initial loan and the clubs are discussing various parameters around that.

The Spain international left-back is viewed as a good fit for Erik ten Hag’s system and is the top candidate to cover for the injured Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Cucurella has been an unused substitute in Chelsea’s first three matches of the new season under boss Mauricio Pochettino with Ben Chilwell ahead of him in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
