Even though Suits ended in 2019, the legal drama has had a huge resurgence in 2023 with its release on Netflix. It’s no surprise that a whole new set of fans fell in love with characters like Mike Ross, Rachel Zane, Jessica Pearson, and Harvey Specter. But, if you stuck with the series after season 7, you’ll know that Rachel and Mike leave the show before the last two seasons. While we know Meghan Markle (Rachel) left Suits because of her engagement to Prince Harry, what about Patrick J. Adams (Mike)?
Adams first announced his departure in 2018. Adams had a lot going on in his personal life at the time, which was a huge factor in his decision to leave. During his time filming Suits, Adams married Pretty Little Liars alum Troian Bellisario in 2016 and the couple had their first child together in 2018. It also worked out that as he pondered whether to leave the show or not, he saw Mike’s story line coming to a natural end.
“After seven seasons—really, eight years of being away from home and away from my now-wife and there was that pressure. I started thinking about leaving at the end of the first half of season six, after Mike was released from prison. From a story point of view, I was a little unsure of what was left for him to do. Mike had made the pledge during his trial that if he were allowed to continue to practice the law, he would dedicate his time and energy to underrepresented people and not big, corporate interests. I wasn’t sure how we were going to work that version of the character into the fabric of the show. Aaron Korsh and I talked about it and he pitched this idea of Harvey (Gabriel Macht) offering a one-for-one deal that would keep Mike working at the firm so he could gather the resources to go and do more pro-bono cases. That brought up an interesting season seven. And I’m proud of how this season turned out,” Adams told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the season 7 release.
Adams expressed that he wanted his departure to feel natural and true to his character and not have his tenure on Suits ends in an out-of-place courtroom shootout or tragedy. With Markle departing around the same time, it made sense to give the on-screen couple a happy ending and leave the show together.
Adams stayed away for the entirety of season 8, but he did briefly reprise his character for the final season. Mike Ross made a few guest appearance in season 9, facing off against Harvey Spector and returning to New York one last time.
“It was about, ‘We’d love to get the band back together,’ basically. Do one last trip around the world. It was as simple as that. For me, it was just an excuse to come and see everybody and really be here for the final moment,” Adams told Entertainment Tonight in 2019.
With the most recent news of a new Suits spin-off from creator Aaron Korsh, there is a real possibility that we haven’t seen the last of Mike Ross just yet, but only time will tell. For now, you can stream Suits season 1 through 8 on Netflix and the full series on Peacock.
