Amex Platinum Authorized User Bonus Excludes Free Companion Card
American Express often offers cardholders a bonus for adding an additional user to their account. These bonuses can often be quite lucrative, although they have dried up a bit lately.
Some people are still getting targeted and there’s an important change for one of these offers for the Amex Platinum Card. The terms of this new offer (POID K6K7:9991) exclude free additional card from earning the bonus.
Amex Platinum cardholders can choose to add an Additional Platinum Card or Companion Platinum Card, which are both types of Additional Cards on the primary Platinum Card Member’s account. There is a $195 annual fee for Additional Platinum Cards. There is no fee for Companion Platinum Cards. However, Additional Platinum Cards have many of the same benefits as the primary Platinum Card, many of which are not available on Companion Platinum Cards.
And now Companion Platinum Cards are not eligible for these authorized user bonuses either. Here’s a screenshot of the offer:
It states the following:
“You will not be eligible to receive this bonus for Companion Platinum Card Members that you may add to your account.”
So you can only earn the 20,000 Membership Rewards bonus when you add an Additional Platinum Card by 5/9/24 and spend $2,000 in the first 6 months. That is still a good bonus if you are planning to add an Additional Platinum Card and pay the $195. But, many people prefer adding the free Companion Platinum Cards for these authorized user bonuses.
