This benefit may only be used in the United States.)
New Amex Gold annual fee
The revamped American Express Gold Card comes with an increased annual fee. You’ll now pay $325 for the card each year, a $75 hike from the previous $250 fee (see rates & fees).
The higher annual fee applies to both new and existing cardholders. If you already have an Amex Gold, the new fee kicks in on your renewal date, beginning Oct. 1, 2024.
Should you get an Amex Gold card?
With a $325 annual fee, the Amex Gold card isn’t for everyone. Still, it’s still one of our favorite cards for travelers who want to earn maximum rewards on food spending.
But like any new card, you should do the math to decide whether the American Express Gold Card fits your regular spending before you apply.
Does the Amex Gold fit your spending habits?
Based on points value, you could make up the fee cost by spending $8,125 annually on combined restaurant and supermarket purchases, equal to $677 per month. At a rate of 4x points per dollar (assuming a standard redemption rate of $0.01 per point), you’ll earn $325 in rewards value, before accounting for your points earned from 3x on flights or 1x on non-category spending.
Beyond that, you’ll also get up to $424 in statement credits each year from the Gold Card’s annual benefits. This can surpass the annual fee cost on its own, as long as you’re able to use all of the available statement credits. However, if you don’t have any restaurants in your area on the Resy app or use Uber for ridesharing, for example, this can be much more difficult to maximize.
Will you maximize your Amex Gold travel credits?
The other thing to consider is how often you travel — and how you like to travel. Though you can use its dining credits, restaurant rewards, and supermarket rewards at home, much of this card’s value also comes from travel spending. It earns 3x Membership Rewards points on eligible flight purchases, offers experience credits for eligible hotel stays through The Hotel Collection, and gets the best redemption rate when you use points to book future travel.
If you don’t travel often or you’re not sure you’ll be able to maximize the Amex Gold credits, you might instead consider a no-annual-fee cash-back card with similar rewards on dining and groceries, but without the added cost.
But for frequent travelers who can maximize all the Amex Gold has to offer — with enough value to offset the steep annual fee — this card can help you save on travel costs while making the most of your regular spending.
