Hilton Will Disclose All Mandatory Fees Upfront
Hilton said on Thursday that it is working to ensure mandatory fees are displayed upfront on all its websites and apps. There’s been plenty of criticism and lawsuits against hotel operators recently over these hidden fees. These anti-competitive practices mislead consumers and prevent comparative shopping.
Hilton revealed its efforts in a letter to U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Jerry Moran. They are co-sponsors of the bipartisan Hotel Fees Transparency Act which aims to create a standard for mandatory fee display for hotels and short-term rentals.
Marriott took similar action in response to a lawsuit by Washington, D.C.’s and Texas attorneys general, and so did Hyatt. Last year, Airbnb also made changes to the way it displays prices on its platform after it faced customer complaints. Last week, California lawmakers passed bills that if signed, will require operators of hotels within the state to fully disclose all fees and charges upfront as of July 2024.
Hilton announced in the letter it now supports the legislation introduced in the Senate. “At Hilton, we support your introduction of the Hotel Fees Transparency Act in the U.S. Senate”, the letter reads. “We have long worked to ensure mandatory fees charged by hotels in our system are fully disclosed to the consumer anywhere they are sold. This bill would provide much-needed consistency for our industry, and we commit to continuing to work with you to advance this important legislation.”
Hilton said on Thursday it is also wants all platforms that advertise, distribute, and sell their inventory to display all fees to ensure the consumer sees consistent information wherever they book.
