Get Free Weekly Credit Reports
Update: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion are making free weekly credit reports permanent.
Original article: The three nationwide consumer credit reporting agencies, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, are extending free weekly credit reports to Americans for an additional year until April 20, 2022. The additional year extension comes after the three bureaus first offered weekly free credit reports at the start of the pandemic. The free credit reports are available on AnnualCreditReport.com.
Under federal law, all consumers are entitled to obtain one free credit report every 12 months. That’s one each from the three national consumer reporting agencies, and under other special circumstances. Now with the extension, you have increased access to check your credit report for free, up to 156 times. That’s 3 free credit reports per week, for 52 weeks.
“Access to financial information and records on a more frequent basis helps people plan for their future while also taking care of the present during these challenging times. We strive to make credit more accessible and available to people every day and we hope continuing to make free credit reports available each week is helpful to consumers,” said Mark W. Begor, CEO Equifax; Brian Cassin, CEO Experian; and Chris Cartwright, CEO TransUnion in the announcement.
Consumers should review all items appearing in each section of their credit report, especially if you frequently apply for credit cards. Lenders, landlords, insurers, and others use your credit score and credit report to evaluate your ability to pay your bills on time.
Your credit report gives a quick look into your overall financial health. You can find things like your personal information, current and historical credit accounts from the past seven to 10 years, balances, recent inquiries and other public records. If an error is identified, contact the credit reporting agency immediately to initiate a dispute of that information. Weekly credit reports can be requested at http://www.annualcreditreport.com.
