Cheaper Flights to Dominican Republic?
Dominican Republic offers plenty for both beach and adventure lovers, making it a popular destination in the Caribbean. The country saw more than 10 million visitors in 2023, with Americans accounting for 43% of the total.
If you are planning to visit Dominican Republic, then you could soon see cheaper airfare prices. That’s thanks to a federal aviation policy known as the Open Skies agreement.
The United States and Dominican Republic signed the agreement earlier this month. Once entered into force, it will bring the civil aviation transportation relationship between the United States and the Dominican Republic to the highest modern standard.
Currently, the U.S. has Open Skies agreements with 28 countries of the European Union, Australia, Switzerland and Japan.
The agreement includes unrestricted capacity and frequency of services for both passenger and all-cargo carriers, open route rights, an open charter regime, self-handling provisions, and open code-sharing opportunities. That means less regulations and more flights.
Airfares for routes protected by the Open Skies policy are on average 32% cheaper, according to the US Travel Association. But it is unlikely that we see that kind of price drop for flight between the United States and Dominican Republic.
The reason for that is the abundance of current flights between the two countries. American Airlines, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Spirit, and United Airlines already offer nonstop flights from various cities in the US to Punta Cana, Puerto Plata and more. There are about 95 flights each day.
