Choice Privileges Devaluation for Preferred Hotels Awards
Choice Hotels and Preferred Hotels & Resorts have long had a partnership. Just a few months ago I wrote about a positive change for redeeming Choice Privileges points towards Preferred Hotels awards. You no longer need to call, as you can just redeem points online.
But now comes the bad news. Awards prices have jumped considerably, by more than 50% in many cases.
For those who are not familiar with Preferred Hotels & Resorts, this is a hotel chain, or group, with over 650 independent hotels, resorts, and residences, across 85 countries. Preferred Hotels & Resorts does not own, operate, or manage any of the hotels.
Award pricing normally varied between 20,000 and 55,000 Choice points. Travel with Grant now reports that award prices can go as high as 87,000 points, which is a huge increase. That’s a jump of 58%.
Price increases seem to be across the board, but actual increases vary widely.
These redemptions provided a great use for Choice points, so this is undoubtedly bad new for those who are invested in this program. On top of that, there was no announcement from Choice Hotels about this devaluation. I think there’s still some value in these redemptions, but it’s not the sweet spot it used to be.
