Cambridge United head coach Mark Bonner is ‘hopeful’ that both Sullay Kaikai and Saikou Janneh will be available for Monday’s Sky Bet League One trip to Burton Albion.
Kaikai, who returned to the club for a second spell in the summer, has not played since the 1-1 draw with Port Vale on September 23 because of a knee problem, while fellow attacker Janneh has been sidelined since mid-August with a pulled hamstring.
However, the duo are both back in full training and should be in contention to feature live in front of the Sky Sports television cameras in Staffordshire.
Bonner said: “(They’re both) training fully so we’re hopeful they’ll both be able to be involved.
“We’re keeping our eye closely on that but they’ve trained fully this morning, which is good.”
One player that will not play against Burton – or for the foreseeable future – is Elias Kachunga.
The off-season arrival from Bolton Wanderers limped off with a hamstring injury at Derby County late last month and a subsequent scan has ruled him out for at least six weeks.
Bonner added: “It was really similar to Saikou, he just pulled up in the game and you just know it’s a hamstring. He was hopeful that he might have caught it early enough but the scans showed up what the physios expected.
“It’s six-to-eight weeks (out) for him, which is a real frustration because he was just getting going nicely. He came in late and missed a lot of the pre-season, which can be a consequence of that – these sorts of injuries.
“Kach is just trying to get up to speed and then obviously has broken down a little bit. He’ll be a big loss for us because he can cover lots of positions and he’s got excellent physicality and excellent experience.”
