How long does an Avocado mattress last?

Avocado Warranty: 25-Year Warranty

Avocado designs its mattresses to last at least 25 years, which is why each one comes with a 25-year limited warranty. This is longer than some competitors – with warranties for the mattresses in our rating starting at 10 years – though it is common for manufacturers to offer lifetime warranties that cover your mattress for as long as you own it.

Keep in mind: Avocado’s warranty only applies if the claim is made by the original purchaser and if the mattress was bought directly from the company. In qualifying circumstances, the company will replace or repair the mattress for free during the first 10 years of the warranty. After this period, the customer must pay a prorated charge in addition to any shipping or transportation costs.

The warranty covers the following manufacturing defects:

  • Visible sagging of more than 1.5 inches
  • Splits or cracks in the foam 
  • Defects in the cover, such as torn fabric or stitching
  • Cosmetic damages that interfere with mattress performance
  • Changes in size measuring more than 2 inches after 30 days of use

Any damages to the mattress caused by misuse are not covered by the warranty. Neither are normal wear and tear, a natural increase in softness, or minor flaws (such as those that don’t impede your ability to use the mattress). Failure to properly care for the mattress can void the warranty. That’s why Avocado recommends placing your mattress on an appropriate foundation, unboxing it within 30 days of receiving it, and rotating the mattress periodically.

How do I return an Avocado mattress?

Avocado Trial Period: 365-Day Sleep Trial

To return an Avocado mattress, call customer service during the trial period. Be sure to wait at least 30 days from delivery to initiate a return because Avocado requires one month of testing to ensure you have had time to get used to the new mattress. Avocado’s one-year sleep trial is above average, with most other mattress companies offering 120 days to test out your new mattress.

Once you’ve called Avocado customer service, it will arrange for pickup and donation of your old mattress. There’s a $99 fee applied to returns that will be deducted from your refund, and any optional add-ons you may have purchased, such as in-home delivery and setup fees, will not be refunded.

Avocado mattresses are made from natural, nontoxic, and certified organic materials. As a brand, Avocado states its goal is to create affordable and eco-friendly bedding using GOTS-certified cotton and wool as well as GOLS-certified latex. The brand’s product lineup includes not only mattresses but mattress toppers, mattress pads, crib mattresses, pillows, sheets, duvet covers, and more.

Once you unbox your Avocado mattress and remove the plastic wrap, it will take a few hours to expand to its full dimensions. You do not have to wait this long to sleep on the mattress, which will be ready to use after about 30 minutes. As for unpacking the mattress, we were able to open and unroll a queen-size Avocado Green in about seven and a half minutes.

You may notice the corners of your mattress expanding more slowly than the center. You can speed up this process by lifting the corners at their edges and shaking them out. The mattress might also show wrinkles from being compressed, even after it’s reached its full height. However, these should disappear after a few days.

Avocado says its mattresses should not release a chemical smell in your home. This odor is typically caused by memory foam mattresses off-gassing, which refers to the emission of gases called volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can happen while mattresses expand after being unboxed. Instead of memory foam, Avocado mattresses contain natural latex, which does not off-gas but may still give off a natural scent resembling rubber.

Avocado mattresses also hold several third-party certifications for product safety and low VOC emissions, including Greenguard Gold, Eco-INSTITUT, and Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex.

Avocado mattresses do not require a box spring. Avocado recommends placing your mattress on a solid foundation or platform bed with slats placed 5 inches apart or less. While you can use a box spring under an Avocado Green Mattress, you should note that Avocado mattresses contain a specific, five-zone spring system, so placing the mattress on a box spring will slightly alter the feel. If you are using a solid base, Avocado recommends placing the mattress on a coconut pad. Otherwise, the platform will block airflow and potentially create more heat than you’d like at night. The porous coconut fiber mat creates a small amount of space for air to circulate.
