American Express seems to be testing out a new type of offer on some of its credit cards. These offers are showing up through select links only for now and only for some people.
Instead of a fixed amount for the welcome bonus, such as 150,000 Membership Rewards Points for Amex Platinum for example, the offer will state “up to 150,000”. So the actual bonus that you receive could be lower.
Some people are seeing these types of offers for the Amex Platinum and Amex Gold credit cards at this link. Those are the only cards I’ve seen so far that are showing these new types of offers. The read as follows:”
- Amex Platinum Card: Up to 150,000 Membership Rewards® Points. Find out your welcome offer if you’re approved.
- Amex Gold Card: Up to 90,000 Membership Rewards® Points. Find out your welcome offer if you’re approved.
This is an image of the Amex Gold Card offer for “up to 90,000 Membership Rewards points”. As you can see, you have to apply first and then you’ll find out the actual offer.
The offer terms state: After you submit your application and before you accept the Card (if you are approved), we will tell you the exact amount of Membership Rewards® Points which you are eligible to earn, which will be an amount up to 90,000 points.
And as you might expect, the offer that you will receive could be lower than what is first stated in the “up to” wording. After sending the applications, you will something like this:
Here you see that the welcome bonus is for 60,000 Membership Rewards points in this case. Now you have the option to withdraw your application (or do nothing), or accept the card and the bonus shown. If you decide to withdraw your application, then there is no impact to your credit score. If you accept the card, then it could result in a hard pull, although that’s rare for existing American Express cardholders.
