Amex Gold Card Upgrade Offer for 90,000 Points
American Express is targeting select Amex Green Card members with a big offer to upgrade to an Amex Gold Card. This is by far the best bonus we have seen, and those targeted can earn 90,000 Membership Rewards points. Check out the details below.
Upgrade Offer
- Upgrade to Amex Gold Card and earn an extra 90,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $2,000 in purchases on the Card in the first six months of Card Membership.
- $325 Annual Fee
Where Can You Find This Offer?
This offer is showing in select American Express accounts as a banner on top. You could also see it in the Amex Offers section, or by email. I have no direct link for this offer, so you will just need to keep your fingers crossed and check your accounts.
If you do see the offer, then you should apply right away. The offer might not pop up again if you check again later.
Must Keep Your Card for 12 Months
It is important to note that you can NOT close, or downgrade, the new Amex Gold Card within 12 months of accepting this upgrade offer. If you do, American Express may, and possibly will claw back the bonus points.
So once you upgrade, you should set a reminder for 12 months from now, so you can downgrade the cards back to the Amex Green Card if you don’t want to pay the higher annual fee. That way you can recoup some of the annual fee.
The 12 month clock starts from the date you accept the upgrade offer, and is not related to the annual fee at all.
While you can’t close or downgrade the card within 12 months, you can take another upgrade offer to Platinum within that time period, if you are lucky enough to get targeted again.
Annual Fee
When you upgrade, your card anniversary date doesn’t change. It will continue to be on the same date as the old card.
You will be charged a prorated annual membership fee for your new Card, based on the time remaining until your next account anniversary date.
Should You Take This Offer?
There is one thing to keep in mind with upgrade offers from American Express. Once you go for an upgrade offer, you will no longer be eligible for a welcome bonus on that card. That’s because Amex has a well known lifetime rule, which doesn’t allow you to get the bonus on a card if you have or had that card within the last 5-7 years.
So upgrade offers are usually a good idea for cards that you already had in the past. You wouldn’t be eligible for a welcome bonus anyway, so taking that upgrade offer doesn’t mess up anything.
