American Airlines Orders 85 Boeing 737 MAX Jets

Boeing and American Airlines have revealed plans to enhance the airline’s worldwide fleet by placing its initial order for the largest 737 MAX aircraft.

American Airlines is set to acquire 115 of the 737-10 model, comprising a new order for 85 jets and the conversion of a prior order for 30 of the smaller 737-8 variant. Additionally, the airline has indicated the possibility of purchasing 75 more 737-10 jets in the future.

This move will elevate the airline’s existing order book from approximately 70 airplanes to over 150, marking a substantial boost to its extensive growth strategy. The focus is on integrating highly efficient jets into its domestic and short-haul international network.

The introduction of the 737-10 model will seamlessly complement American’s current lineup of 737-8 airplanes. This strategic decision underscores the airline’s commitment to leveraging the commonality and flexibility within the 737 MAX family to efficiently cater to the escalating demand for air travel.

With firm orders for more than 150 737 MAXs and 25 787 Dreamliners, American will add more than 180 Boeing airplanes to its fleet in the next decade.

Here are a few things worth noting for each model:

• 737-8: Delivering improvements in fuel, emissions and cost performance, the 737-8 can fly 3,500 nautical miles (6,480 km) and seats 162 to 210 passengers depending on configuration.
• 737-10: Offering the best per-seat economics of any single-aisle airplane, the 737-10 can carry up to 230 passengers and offers a range of up to 3,100 nautical miles (5,740 km).
