Cancun Airport Will Get $1.4 Billion Renovation in 2024
Cancun International Airport (CUN) will undergo a major renovations this year. The airport’s owner, Aeropuertos del Surest (ASUR), has revealed plans to invest $1.4 billion on renovating and expanding passenger services at the second busiest airport in Mexico.
The Cancun Sun reports that the upgrades will be focused on Terminal 1, Terminal 4, as well as a new Maya Train Station.
Terminal 4, which is both a domestic and international terminal, was opened in 2017. It serves as many as nine million passengers annually, as well as several US carriers such as Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines and Sun Country Airlines. The terminal will be expanded to accommodate more flights and passengers. Other full service airline from the US and other countries fly into Terminal 3.
The upgrades at Terminal 4 will likely include a on-site hotel and additional lounge. However, more details on the progress of these projects will be revealed at a later date. Currently, two MERA Business Lounges and The Lounge in Partnership with Air Transat are the only options at this terminal.
Terminal 1 will also see upgrades at it seven gates. This terminal is almost exclusively used for private and charter flights.
Another important addition is a brand-new train station for the Maya Train. This service launched last month between Cancun and Campeche. The train station will not only be used for tourists departing west to Campeche and eventually south towards Playa del Carmen and Tulum, but it will also be a convenient way for travelers to get to the airport with public transportation.
