An independent micro-brewery that began in a double-garage in Thatcham is looking at opening a premises in Newbury town centre.
Delphic Brewing Company – which began in 2019 and operates from a 320 sq ft garage – has found a 3,192 sq ft warehouse and retail space at what was once Motorist Discount Centres in Mayors Lane.
Tom Broadbank said, in a new premises, he will be able to increase capacity and sell directly to the customer in the unit that will come with a taproom.
He has secured funding to renovate the premises for the brewhouse to move in, including the brewery flooring, drainage and utilities.
But he says he needs some help getting the taproom open and making it the best place it can be.
Delphic Brewing, so far, has been a chance for Mr Broadbank to channel his creativity but he says he is only scratching the surface.
Each beer name has a meaning, he says, with Best Bitter ‘Level Crossing’ being named after the Thatcham level crossing – as the brewery was founded near the train station.
Squeezing in a bit of fun, he features pop culture references from films like Hot Fuzz with ‘It’s Just the One Hop Actually’ and ‘I See Bread People’ from creepy classic The Sixth Sense.
When the pandemic hit, the company shifted to web shop sales and takeaway beer, bottles and cans.
“We also brew beer with local customers from foraged blackberries,” he said.
“This is the third year where local customers can bring down blackberries for beer and can get two free cans when it is ready.
“We have prizes for the top three [weights of blackberries] to get free T-shirts and extra cans of beer.
“This is just an idea I had and it has grown year on year.”
The T-shirts are designed by streetwear company Blind Maggot, based in Bartholomew Street.
Mr Broadbank is already crowdfunding to kit out the new taproom.
His Crowdfunder page can be found at https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/delphic
So far he has raised £1,590 of his £30,000 target.
